We've been lucky so far this year. With all the flu and H1N1 going around, no one in the family has yet to come down with it.
(Knock on wood).
I did bring the boys to the pediatrician for both the seasonal flu and H1N1 vax last week. I hope this means neither of them will get it.
Since yesterday was election day, the kids had no school. For once, I was really happy that there was no school! I seem to be on the back end of a head cold (just really stuffy sinuses, nothing too major) so it was nice to have an extra day to sleep in and not worry about doing anything much in particular (and I'm feeling much better today).
Over the last six-weeks we've had a "Family Challenge" going on here. We each picked three things we wanted to achieve over the six weeks and then we worked to achieve them. I'm happy to report both boys met and exceeded their goals. Mom and Dad didn't fare so well - neither Rich nor I met our goals, but we weren't off by much!
Sam was the winner by far so he earned $25 for winning! And Josh came in second - he achieved all his goals too, but didn't accumulate as many points. BUT he also "won" $25 for doing so well in school, winning the science fair and really sticking to his many commitments and keeping his grades up.
So yesterday I took the boys out so they could spend some of their money. Sam really wanted a new Webkinz and Josh wanted an "Action Replay" for his DSLite. Part of my plan was to bring them to Toys r' Us and have them make a list of things they wanted for Christmas (and Sam for his birthday) but once we got to Toys r' Us, Josh had to get his Action Replay and couldn't focus on anything else!
So I guess we'll have to try that again another day! I did manage to get some ideas for Sam's birthday at least!
We're busy gearing up for Sam's birthday next week. We've got his birthday party here this Saturday -- please pray that we all stay healthy and the weather stays beautiful! I want to have the kids outside as much as possible. And since we're making this a "Family Affair" it may be a bit crowded if we can't move outside for part of the evening!
Finally, I wanted to give a special shout out to our pediatrician's blog: Jerry's Jungle. We love all the folks at Kennesaw Pediatrics -- they are wonderful! We've been with them since just before Sam was born and have seen them grow from having just 3 doctors to having 6 on staff and now they are on Facebook, Twitter and have their own blog too! Check them out!

Hello Out There? Is anyone still reading????
I can't believe it's been 2 months since I last updated!
We're no longer on vacation in Michigan with my parents... we've been home for quite a while!
Things around here have been so busy! Here's a quick update/recap of our life the last two months...
We got home from my parent's house and Josh decided to re-learn to ride his bike. He used to be able to ride it, but then he fell and lost his nerve so he had to re-learn this summer. Well, it didn't take him long and now I can barely get him off it!
Sam got a new bike too and loves to ride his. When they come home from school all they want to do is ride their bikes!
We started school here early August. Josh LOVES his 3rd grade teacher - and so do I! She's wonderful and just what Josh needs!
I went back to work two mornings a week at Sam's preschool as the teaching assistant in a 2 year old class. I really love it! It's so nice to have something to do! And the money is all going toward the kid's activities!
Both Josh and Sam are playing soccer this year. Josh is also playing baseball AND he's joined the Cub Scouts AND he's doing a project for the school Science Fair! We are going to be one busy family!
Today was the first day of sports - and Josh was sick! So we missed his games, but Sam had fun at his!

The last thing I wanted to post pictures of is a project Josh did for ALP. He had to turn a clothes pin into a "Flying Animal." He decided to make a pheasant because when we were in Michigan, we went out with Grampa and watched Annie (Grampa's dog) point pheasants and show off what she'd learned at "Doggy Boot Camp" getting ready for hunting season. After, we got some of the feathers off the dead birds.

Then he made an "Above and Beyond" project by making a diorama of the pheasant's habitat.

And Sam wanted to make something too so he made a Race Track! This ended up being his class project we didn't know he'd need! The next day he came home with a homework assignment called, "It looks like a box, but really it's a....."
That's a bit of what's been going on with us -- in a nutshell. I promise to make more time to post pictures and updates. We're busy, but having lots of fun! I just need to start getting into the swing of things again!

Keeping the Kids Busy, and Mom Sane
Now that summer break is in full swing, I'm trying to keep the kids busy and active - most of the time.
I have this fear that they'd spend all summer in front of the TV playing PS3 if I don't lay down some ground rules. Plus, I want Josh to be ready for the routine changes we'll have next school year so I figured summer is a great time to ease into the new workload he'll be getting.
I've reinstated the chore chart. Both kids have some chores they have to do - and honestly it's nothing too taxing and stuff they should just be doing (but don't). When they do their chores they can earn points and trade the points in for things. Like time on the PS3.
I am also making them do "educational activities." Because I really believe they should keep their minds sharp. Sam loves doing the "Homework." Josh, not so much. But, since he can choose what he wants to do, it seems to be getting better.
I'm also trying to do one "field trip" a week and we're taking full advantage of the free summer movies at the local movie theater. This week we went with the mom's group to a "paint your own pottery" place. They had a great time. Josh picked out a guitar and Sam painted a turtle shaped bowl. I can't wait to see how they turned out. We get them next week. I was so busy talking that I forgot to take pictures. I'll take a picture of the finished products so you can see how they turn out.
Other field trips we have scheduled: a trip to the local pizza parlor for a behind the scenes tour, our grocery store and the fire station. I would also like to get up to the Tellus Museum again next week and possibly to the Aquarium sometime this month too.
All this with trips to the pool on nice days and then the normal chores and errands keeps us pretty busy. Thankfully, the boys still have some down time to rest and play like you should on summer break too!

Updates, etc...
We had the most beautiful weather this weekend!
We seem to have had some very nice weather during the week, but come Saturday and Sunday, we just get rain. I have to tell you, it gets a bit old.
This weekend was fantastic though. The weather was nice, not too hot, not too cold, and almost no humidity.
It started off, on Friday, with Josh's End of Year Baseball Party. It was a pizza party at the pool. I thought the water was way too cold, but the boys both went in and had a great time. Considering how often our games got rained out, we were all so happy to have a wonderful end of season party!
The rest of the weekend was just spent doing yard work, going to the pool, cooking out and sitting on our back deck. Rich installed some outdoor speakers so it was nice sitting outside, listening to music and playing with the boys.
This week the boys and I are keeping busy as well. My goal this summer is to keep the kids active and try to keep them learning. They have some workbooks they have to do to earn PlaStation3 time. And they have chore charts they must complete and earn points to trade in for different things - like PS3 more time. It's been working pretty well. We also have the My Personal Trainer: Math for the Nintendo DS which Josh can do to earn points. He loves that.
I'm also trying to play outings every week from now until we go to Michigan. My goal is to find free or low cost things to do. My neighborhood Mom's Group has one outing planned each week that we'll do, plus there is the free movie once a week. I'd also like to get the boys to the Tellus Museum or Aquarium at least once before we go too, since we're members there already. I'd also love to bring them to the zoo -- weather permitting. We're not members, so that will have to be a "special trip."
So that's us in a nutshell at the moment. On Thursday we're going to a paint your own pottery place. Josh's looking forward to that. I'll get some pictures and post them when I can.

Where'd the Time Go?
So, here it is Friday and I'm still playing catch up from last week!
Last Friday was Josh's last day of school. His current school only goes through 2nd grade, so it was his last day at that school! He was a bit sad, but he's excited about starting at the Intermediate School next year too!
Last Thursday, they had a small class party and put on plays for the parents. Here are some pics of Josh and his classmates and teacher....
His two best friends in his class, Nadine and Emily. Emily is moving and we're very sad because she and Josh were very good friends this year. According to Nadine, they fancied each other but I'm in denial about that and Josh says they were just good friends.

And his whole class together. They were a great bunch of kids, but apparently 2nd graders are very rowdy!
Also on Friday, Josh had his last baseball game of the season. He did really well and made lots of progress this year. At his last at-bat Rich pitched to him and Josh had his best hit of the season. Rich only had one pitch and Josh swung and smacked the ball as hard as he could. Right over Rich's head! I was lucky to get the picture!
On Friday night Rich and I were trying to think of something to do that weekend. We didn't want to sit around the house and let the long weekend go to waste. So we decided to go to Chattanooga for the night. We go up there quite often. It's only an hour and a half away, but we decided to make it special and spend the night up there.
There are lots of places to stay, but we decided to stay at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel (run by Holiday Inn). It was a great choice! It looks like they are refurbishing it a bit, but at the moment it's a bit dated - however, the staff were so nice! And the restaurant was surprisingly good!
They converted the old train station into a hotel and it's really cool. You can even stay in the train cars if you want. We opted for a 2-room suite so the kids could have their own room and we could spread out, but I definitely want to stay in the train cars one time. And the boys want to do that too.
We did the usual trip to the Aquarium on Saturday but wanted to do something a bit different on Sunday. And it was raining so anything outside was out of the question. We decided to go to Ruby Falls. It's a large underground waterfall. The trip had us walking through a cave to the cavern at the end with the falls. Pictures from the site can be found here. It was lots of fun and very pretty! My pictures from out trip can be found here and here. Not all of them, but a good selection.
This week I've been trying to keep the boys busy. We're trying some new things this year. I don't want the boys to sit infront of the TV playing video games all day so we're getting out and exploring and trying to find free things to do in the city. Or at least inexpensive ones! Starting next week we seem to have quite a bit planned with free movies, trips with the Mom's Group and things I've planned.
I'll try to be better at updating with our adventures and the Things We Do!

It's Friday! The End of a LONG Week!d
I am so glad it's Friday!
Rich had to work last weekend so it feels like we've had one BIG LONG week!
Josh finished up the last of his homework with his ALP presentation on Wednesday. He did fantastic. He got 48 of 50 points - only lost points on being "organized" during his presentation.
He was very proud to do so well, but did say "If only I was more organized!"
To which both Mom and Dad replied, "That comes with practice Josh. The more you practice BEFORE you give your presentation, the better organized you will be."
So, now he knows when we bug him to practice, we're not doing it to be mean. I could not get him to practice his presentation to save my life. So I figured, this may be one lesson that the only way he'll learn is to "learn it himself."
But we are proud of him for receiving such good marks on the whole project!
Josh also had Field Day and a "Field Trip" to the park behind his school this week. Next week he has his 2nd Grade End of Year Party to celebrate the end of his time at the Elementary School. Next year he goes on to an "Intermediate" school that has grades 3-5. Last night we went to Parent & Student night at the new school. He's very excited about going there. They have lots of activities for the kids like Student Council, "Recorder Karate," an International Drum Group, Robotics Club... and all sorts of extra curricular activities to enhance his education.
I was impressed too. I had heard that the homework and expectations take a huge leap in 3rd grade and from the presentation, they do. But it also looks like they try to keep the learning fun with Author's Night and the kids putting on plays and doing projects about the subjects they're learning about. Josh was so excited to be "movin' up" that he came home and said he wished 3rd grade started tomorrow!
We also had a few more issues with my car. Caused a lot of stress and inconvenience, but in the end we just needed (another) new battery covered under warranty.
The boys and I have managed to get to the pool this week. The water was too cold for me, but they liked it!
The weather's been a bit like summer here this spring. Lots of rain making the days when it isn't raining quite humid. It seems the drought may be over! Most lakes are at or above pre-drought levels, but the "watering restrictions" haven't been lifted yet. Of course with all the rain, who needs to "water" the plants?

It's Friday and the Weekend is Just Around the Corner
Well. Here we are at Friday already.
Seems the closer to the end of the school year the faster time flies! It's hard to believe Sam has just over a week left of school. Six days to be exact! And Josh only has 3 weeks left (15 days and HE'S counting!)
We've been busy. Josh has one last homework assignment. It's for his ALP class. He has to give a presentation on "Space" for the "Space Time" unit they've been doing this term. I don't know why, but it seems HIS homework assignment gives MOM more work! I've been running all over town getting his "costume" ready, finding materials for the presentation....
We've been slowly chipping away on it, but the timing is horrible! I really wish she'd given this to the kids three weeks earlier. We've just finished CRCT (state standardized tests) and the kids just don't seem to be able to focus any more. Plus with the weather being beautiful it's hard to justify staying indoors to do homework. But still we sit. Me forcing him to do work and him moaning about it.
But it's due next week so we should be all down hill from then on.
We did manage to get outside and run through the sprinkler's again yesterday though. Those boys are so full of energy and just want to play outside, it's hard to say no.
Sam was a bit more daring this time.
We invited Derek, my neighbor's son, to run through with us.
They had a great time and got very muddy!
This picture was taken AFTER I'd hosed them down. Sam fell and was covered head to foot in mud. I would have gotten a picture of that but he was crying because he was muddy!
Anyway, we've got lots on this weekend. Josh has a baseball game in the afternoon then a sleep over at a friend's house. I told Sam I'd take him out for ice cream after I drop Josh off.
And Sunday we have to finish up Josh's school project. That should be fun with an exhausted, tired boy on our hands!

Random Updates and Things.
Another busy week gone! Last weekend we celebrated my 42nd (!!!) birthday. We had quite a bit planned but had to prove our willingness to change plans.
This time it was NOT one of the kids that got sick, but both my parents! They were supposed to come down and visit for a few days. While they were here, Rich and I had planned to go out to dinner, maybe see a movie... but they had horrible colds (that they are just starting to get over) and the trip was just not do-able.
And the weather here was horrible and rainy. And Rich had to work ALL DAY Saturday -- until 7:00 pm! So we had to change plans and then change them again! Sunday, my actual birthday, was pretty fun. We went to IHOP for breakfast (yum!) and then came home to open presents. Josh was happy that I got the Lara Croft Tombraider game for the Wii, and Sam was happy because I got the Disney movie, Pinnochio. Not all my presents were for the boys - I also got Twilight and Pan's Labrynth on BlueRay and a PS3 game called Drakes Fortune: Uncharted (which the boys are not allowed to play). It was good. We had a great time just hanging out, playing, watching movies and then Rich made me dinner! Perfect!
This week I've been busy getting things ready for the boys. Spring Break started this weekend so I had a few things I needed to get done before they were off. On Thursday Sam had his Easter Party. I made cupcakes.
I'm not really happy with how they came out, but the kids loved them!
Then Thursday evening, Josh had his 2nd grade music performance. He had a speaking part - he was the first one to get up and Welcome the parents. He did great! I have him on video, I just need to figure out how to get it off the camera. We have an old one and are due for an upgrade soon (hint, hint).
The kids sang songs, danced and played musical insturments for the parents. Since I got Josh doing his speaking, I couldn't see him doing the singing and dancing. But I got the important part!
And Friday Josh had a make up baseball game. Last weeks game was cancelled so they played it on Friday. There were no games this weekend. He did really well again! He had 2 great hits, scored twice and "nearly caught the ball!" Instead, his glove was knocked off his hand.
This weekend we've been busy taking care of yard work and getting the garden all sorted. We've not planted anything yet - we're expecting frost this week so we'll do it in a few weeks.
We have lots of big plans for the Spring Break week. Hopefully I'll be able to keep the blog up to date next week!
This time it was NOT one of the kids that got sick, but both my parents! They were supposed to come down and visit for a few days. While they were here, Rich and I had planned to go out to dinner, maybe see a movie... but they had horrible colds (that they are just starting to get over) and the trip was just not do-able.
And the weather here was horrible and rainy. And Rich had to work ALL DAY Saturday -- until 7:00 pm! So we had to change plans and then change them again! Sunday, my actual birthday, was pretty fun. We went to IHOP for breakfast (yum!) and then came home to open presents. Josh was happy that I got the Lara Croft Tombraider game for the Wii, and Sam was happy because I got the Disney movie, Pinnochio. Not all my presents were for the boys - I also got Twilight and Pan's Labrynth on BlueRay and a PS3 game called Drakes Fortune: Uncharted (which the boys are not allowed to play). It was good. We had a great time just hanging out, playing, watching movies and then Rich made me dinner! Perfect!

Heard Around the House This Weekend.
We had a beautiful weekend here in Atlanta. We did manage to get the kids outside to play for a bit, but we also had chores inside so the kids played. Here are some choice snippets from Josh...
"Mom, most of the boys in my class like Rap Music, but not me! I like Rock and Roll!"
Need proof?
I don't know why they insist eon taking off their shirts when they play Guitar Hero...
That game has upped my coolness factor for the time being... "Mom! You know 'Paint it Black?' and 'Schools Out?'"
And then we went out side and got some fresh air too -- Josh had a baseball game....
He hit this ball. He did really well -- good fielding, good base running...
We played some soccer....

And then they boys were filthy so we came home for baths/showers. While I was getting Sam cleaned up Josh got in the shower...
Josh: "Okay Mom, I'm done."
Me (from the other room): Did you wash your hair?
Josh (sighs): Yes!

Josh (getting annoyed): YES!!!!
Me (now looking at Josh): Then why is your hair still dry?
Yes, he had to go back in the shower and actually CLEAN himself!

Making Adjustments...
It's amazing how little changes to schedules can cause all sorts of adjustments.
I'm sure most of you know Rich used to work from home almost every day. It was great because the kids could see him and talk to him. He'd be around for dinner and if he still had work he could eat then head back to the basement to finish up.
Well, with his new role -- he's started working with a new group and he loves it -- he's had to go into the office every day now, with a few exceptions (like yesterday). Usually he gets up and has breakfast with the kids, then does his workout and goes in late. This means he's not home until after dinner and the kids are either in bed or in the process of "going" to bed.
And on the few occasions he goes in early, he usually calls to say there's a late meeting...
So this has messed up our routine in more ways than I can count.
For one thing, the idea of a "Family Dinner" is now just that... "an idea." But, realizing how important it is to sit down together, I don't want to give up on this idea completely. So, now I eat with Rich some nights when he comes home and some nights I eat with the kids.
Of course I also want to eliminate "cooking twice" and I don't really want the kids living on a diet of hot dogs, chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese, so meal planning has to be creative as well. I don't mind the "not quite as healthy" meals for the kids on occasion, but as a rule, I'd like them to eat "real" food. I'm still working on what the best option are here, so suggestions are appreciated! I did just buy a slow cooker and so far it's great, but I'm still working out how best to fit it into our lifestyle. By the way, best way ever to roast beets is in the slow cooker.
Another adjustment is when the kids come home from school. The first thing they do is still open the door to the basement to say hi to Daddy. It's been three weeks!
Our weekends have changed too. Now the little chores Rich used to do in the week, like paying bills and such, he has to do during the weekend.
And it's not just adjusting to Rich's new schedule. My kids are growing up! Josh now has baseball practice on Friday nights and games on Saturdays. Last night, he had his last chorus performance of the year. We went to watch all the local school choruses perform in a "Cluster Concert." All the choruses from the schools in North Cobb (county) came together to perform. Josh's chorus was first and the youngest. Then we listened to some 4th grade choruses, middle school choruses, and the High School Chorus. I tell you, I was very impressed with all the kids!
And poor Sam. The concert didn't even start until 6:30 PM and we didn't get home until almost 9:00 PM. The poor kid usually goes to bed at 7:00 - and what time do you think he got up? Yep, 5:30... I was never so happy to send him to school. He won't be grumpy there, but he will if he stays home!
So, we're all adjusting to new schedules, growing kids and more responsibilities...

Just Call Me "Auntie Purl"
I've been doing a bit of knitting lately and thought I'd share some of what I've done.
This is a baby sweater I made for a friend. She's due with her fourth child (3rd boy) the end of the month. Last month she had a baby shower at a paint your own pottery place. It was pretty cool. I think I may bring Josh there -- he'd have a blast painting up a plate or something.
Anyway, I got the pattern from a book I have called "Weekend Knitting." It was fun to knit up. The yarn was not so great, it kept splitting -- but it was the color I needed. It knit up quickly too. It's unique because it's knit "sideways" -- instead of knitting from bottom to top, it's knit from side to side.
I'm not really happy with the buttons either, but over all, I think it's cute.
I have another friend who just had a baby. This is a bib I quickly knit up for her. I got this pattern from a knitting community called Ravelry. It's from the blog "String Theory." It was a very easy, quick knit up. I used some stash yarn and it didn't take much.
And the last thing I made is my favorite thing so far. I made a turtle -- from the Sheldon pattern on Knitty.com.
This one is Josh's and he named it "Dribble" after the turtle in Judy Blume's "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing."
This is so cute! And very quick to knit up. Plus it was interesting to knit -- lots to do. The boys love it and of course now I need to knit another one so they each have their own. Right now they're doing a great job of sharing "Dribble."
And after I finish Sam's turtle he wants me to knit him a super hero cape! So I've got a few things on the horizon... and still, nothing in the que for me!

My Boy is Now Eight!
Well we had a fun and exciting weekend!
Josh's birthday was on Sunday and instead of a party we talked him into just inviting one friend over to spend the night. We were able to convince him without a party, he'd get a better present because we'd have the money to spend on the gifts.
Worked a charm! On Saturday, he invited his friend Sean over and since we're friends with his parents and hadn't seen them in ages, we just invited the whole family over for dinner. That way Josh and Sam could play with Sean and his brother Jackson for a bit while we had some "grown up" conversation with Pat & Sherry!
One thing Josh did request was that I make some Shark cupcakes from my Hello, Cupcake book. I only made four since there were only four boys.
I think they turned out cute! The "sharks" are twinkies that have been cut and dipped in grey frosting.
The "teeth" were a challenge -- and one fell on top of another one so I had to try and fix it. But in the end, it didn't matter... the boys ate them!
Like I said, the boys were entertaining themselves while the grown ups ate dinner. At one point it sounded like they were having a sack race around the 2nd floor. And guess what? Not only were they having a "sack race" but a "redneck sack race" to boot!
I guess they had to run off all the sugar from the cupcakes!
We got up and took the boys out to IHOP for breakfast then dropped Sean off. I'm still finding his stuff around the house! Good thing he lives close by so I can drop them off!
After we dropped Sean off with his parents it was time to come home to open presents!
We took all the money family had given us for birthdays and bought a "family" present -- a PlayStation3. And it is fantastic! It plays BlueRay Discs and the picture is just awesome! We had to go out and buy a movie just to watch it!
Anyway, he also got two games for the PS3 -- Little Big Planet and Guitar Hero. Sam loves Little Big Planet and Josh has become addicted to Guitar Hero! I must admit, both are fun!

He's got real "bed head" in this photo... he didn't even need to "fake" it! And notice the nice Red Liverpool t-shirt Auntie Jane and Uncle Rich gave him! Needless to say, it's his favorite t-shirt!
Sam has been asking to play tennis and we were lucky enough to get some tennis rackets from Auntie Jo & Uncle Dean for both the boys.
Sam has hardly put his down. He wanted to take it to school to show his friends. When he opened it he said, "Are these for the WII?"
And since it was Josh's birthday, that means it snowed yesterday!
We lucked out here and had no accumulation although other parts of the metro area received quite a bit. We'd had several days of rain prior to the snow so there was lots of ice out on the roads. Our county was the only school district in the Atlanta area (just about) not closed! There may have been two or three others... but most were closed.
So now we're just recovering! Since the kids were tired yesterday, it was nice to just hang out at home and let Josh enjoy his presents!

Brain Dump
My bloggy friends really know how to lay on the guilt trip about not blogging!
And my mom too.
I was chatting with CrazedParent -- she was worried because I've been quiet lately. She said, "Blog about the bloggy funk."
In truth, I could be blogging about stuff... I could be out there reading all your blogs... but I'm being selfish.
But, since I haven't blogged about much, here's my brain dump....
Rich officially starts his new job on Monday. I know he's anxious to start that and begin learning some new things. He's started going in to the office every day so that's taken us all a bit of time to get used to. The boys still open up the basement door when they get home because they have to "tell Daddy something."
It's good for him though to get out of the house and get some interaction with people other than Josh, Sam and me. You know?
Josh's birthday is on Sunday. He'll be 8! EIGHT! I can hardly believe it. We're not having a party this year. He wanted to invite a friend over for a sleep over so we're letting him do that.
We're also getting a "family" present - we pooled all the money that granparents, aunts, uncles and friends had given us for birthdays and got a PlayStation3. So we'll be getting that, and Josh is getting GuitarHero and a few other games, some BlueRay DVD's and a few books.
I'll be sure to post pictures of the GuitarHero next week. I'm quite excited to try it out actually!
Sam is doing well too. He had a renal ultrasound yesterday. The doctor's office just called to say all is good. I thought maybe this was the last one from the way she was talking at his last apointment, but she wants another renal ultrasound in two years. But his right kidney is all gone now (that was the bad one) and the left kidney is very big (all good).
That's about all the news here for the moment. Sam and I are about to make playdough for his class. It's my turn to make it. If you want the recipe, let me know.

Good News All Around
This week has been a great week in our house.
We found out this week that Rich's job transfer was approved. He's being funded by a new group, beginning March 1. He's really excited about working with this new group. I think the people working on it are quite similar to Rich work ethic wise and the project is new and exciting for him.
He's had to start going into the office every day instead of working from home, but he's happy to be learning something new and actually have some work to do for a change. Even though he officially doesn't start until March, he's been getting his feet wet this week as there is loads to do on the new job and nothing to do on the old one!
The second bit of good news came yesterday. Sam had an appointment with his nephrologist (kidney doctor), and she's pleased with his progress. She wants to get one more ultrasound just to check the size of his good kidney, but says we don't have to see her anymore. Sam's normal pediatrician can just monitor him from now on!
One interesting thing... Sam was 39 inches in November for his 4 year check up -- yesterday he was 42.25 inches! He's grown 3 inches in 3 months! Yikes! That explains the restless nights and growing pains though!
And the last bit of good news comes courtesy of Josh. He is in the second grade chorus at his school. They are the only second grade chorus in Cobb County and they were in a Chorus Competition today. They were the youngest Chorus there and they came in first place. They got all "1's" from all the judges.
He was very happy about the result! But apparently, it was a "difficult day." When I asked him to do his homework, he told me he was tired because it was very hard to "be quiet all day long!"
After what seems like months of worry (about Rich's job) and unexpected bills (heaters and cars), it's nice to get good news for a change!

Um... Hello.... Anyone Still Out There?
Oooohhh... me bad.
I know it's been quite a while since I updated. My mom even made a comment to me on Facebook that I needed to up date this thing.
I don't even have a valid excuse... I was reading the Twilight series and got too hooked on them and could not do anything until I'd read them all. But that's done and now I can function again.
So, where were we?
Rich and Josh got home from England on Feb 1. They were tired -- exhausted really -- but had a great time! They left their winter coats at Uncle Dean's and that seems to be the only casualty. Luckily, since they've been home the weather has been beautiful.
There were two big games on that day... Of course the Superbowl was on that day, but more importantly, Liverpool vs. Chelsea. Luckily, both games had the desired result!
The boys got a package in the mail from Grandmother today...
Rich's birthday was last Sunday. Josh was at a sleepover on Saturday night and a friend offered to take Sam for a few hours in the evening -- sort of a last minute thing -- so Rich and I went out on a mini-date. We just went to a local bar and had a drink. I think we got "had" -- one pint of beer and one red wine was $11! Geesh! I don't think we could afford to go out much at those prices!
And then this week has been a flurry of activity! With little errands and things to get done -- ah the life of a stay at home mom!
Sam had his Valentine's Day party on Thursday. I made mini cupcakes...
Yesterday we went with a friend to one of our local museums. It's right here in Kennesaw and is called the "Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History." My friend, Summer, has a family membership and we were able to tailgate in on that.
We haven't been since Sam was born.
You need to know a bit about Kennesaw history and it helps to know about it's role in the Civil War (Kennesaw was called Big Shanty then), but in a nutshell, Kennesaw was the center of the Great Locomotive Chase or Andrew's Raid. Union Soldiers stole a train, they were chased and caught and yada, yada, yada... you can read about if you want... but anyway, they have the actual steam engine from the Great Locomotive chase there -- The General. It's a big engine, in a small room and they have a sound track with train noises playing. Josh was always terrified of this room so we just hadn't been back.
Well, the museum has since opened a Children's Education Center.... It was fantastic! There is a "Toddler" room with soft play things, train tables, puzzles and coloring and there is a room for older kids.
You can send messages via Morse Code from one telegraph station to another, a diesel train simulator, allowing students to be conductors and “drive” a train on their own (this is what the kids are doing in the picture below -- it was VERY cool),
There were interactive videos describing the different job positions available on the railroad, a replica “village” of 19th century downtown Kennesaw, with an open hotel and dry goods store where visitors can try on old-fashioned clothes, boards with buttons to hear train sounds -- another huge hit!
We got there at three and played until they closed at 5:00 -- and we were the only ones there! It was fantastic. Josh really wanted to look at more of the exhibits so next time we go we may spend a bit more time looking -- we really just went straight to the kids part and let them play. Josh also loved the Telegraph Stations and he kept trying to send me messages in Morse Code.
It was much better than I remembered... or the kids are just older. Plus, by the time we got to The General, the noise had been turned off!

I know it's been quite a while since I updated. My mom even made a comment to me on Facebook that I needed to up date this thing.
I don't even have a valid excuse... I was reading the Twilight series and got too hooked on them and could not do anything until I'd read them all. But that's done and now I can function again.
So, where were we?
Rich and Josh got home from England on Feb 1. They were tired -- exhausted really -- but had a great time! They left their winter coats at Uncle Dean's and that seems to be the only casualty. Luckily, since they've been home the weather has been beautiful.
There were two big games on that day... Of course the Superbowl was on that day, but more importantly, Liverpool vs. Chelsea. Luckily, both games had the desired result!
The boys got a package in the mail from Grandmother today...
Rich's birthday was last Sunday. Josh was at a sleepover on Saturday night and a friend offered to take Sam for a few hours in the evening -- sort of a last minute thing -- so Rich and I went out on a mini-date. We just went to a local bar and had a drink. I think we got "had" -- one pint of beer and one red wine was $11! Geesh! I don't think we could afford to go out much at those prices!

Hangin' Out With Sam
This week Josh and Rich are visiting his family in London.
We were supposed to make our "family" trip this year, but decided that next year would be best financially. So, we made the decision that Rich would go visit his family and take Josh as a special treat.
The boys only have 1/2 days this week so it's a good time for Josh to miss school. Plus, his teacher gave him some homework to do so he won't get too far behind. I also bought him a journal to write in every day and he's got my camera to take pictures. Nanny seems to be doing a good job keeping him on track.
We've spoken to the boys almost every day they've been gone, and video called on the computer so we could see them too. We won't get a chance to talk today because they're going in to the city and visiting the Science Museum and then spending the night with some friends that live in the city.
Josh is very excited about the Science Museum. They are studying "Time and Space" in his ALP (Gifted) class and he wants to see the space exhibit there.
Anyway, since Daddy and Josh are having their own little vacation, Sam and I are at home by ourselves. Sam was a bit disappointed that he could not go, but he's such a Mommy's Boy he would have been a nightmare for Rich to have there. Plus, he's a bit more high maintenance than Josh is right now.
So Sam and I have been doing some special things. We went to our favorite indoor play place earlier this week and it looks like the weather is going to be sunny and 55 tomorrow so we're playing hooky and going to the Zoo!
And, we've been playing on the PS2 every day... Lego Batman, Lego StarWars (I & II) and Lego Indiana Jones games. Sam also got a new Lego Indiana Jones set so we've played with the Lego's a bit too.
Can you tell Sam is a bit obsessed with Lego's?
It's been really strange not having Rich and Josh here. Sam's been really well behaved. Not that he's normally horrid, but he's just been better behaved than usual -- I guess there isn't anyone to bother!

Random Updates and Things.
As you've probably noticed from my lack of updates, things have been a bit all over the place lately here.
We're really busy, but there's really not much going on. So today I just thought I'd fill you in on some of the randomness that's going on right now. It's really not all that interesting, but I'm sure my parents are dying for an update of some sort.

So, as you know, our heating has been on the blink. Last weekend it got so bad we decided that maybe there was something wrong with it and we should call someone out.
And with our luck lately -- we seem to be hemorrhaging money at the moment -- we fully expected to need a new furnace. When we bought the house, the inspector told us it really wasn't sufficient to heat our whole house. Which is why we weren't really clued in that it may actually be broken.
So, I called out to a neighbor that has a HVAC company. He came over and said ignitor switch was broken. $55 part, $65 labor. Needless to say, we were thrilled at the $120 price tag as opposed to the $5000 one we thought we may need.
And he said the heater WAS good enough for the house and showed us how to actually set the flow to regulate upstairs-downstairs. We've all been very happy and warm this week!
Our garage door is still hosed but that will have to wait. We're just parking outside at the moment.

I've been doing a lot of substitute teaching for Sam's school this week. Even though it's only 4 hours a day, it's so tiring! We get home and it's almost time to get Josh from the bus. I never realized how much I missed my mornings and how much I got done until I didn't have them.
One of the teachers at the school is quite ill -- she's in the hospital with some sort of virus and they don't really know what's wrong at the moment. The school did some teacher shuffling since it looks like she'll be out for a bit longer, so I'm only there 2 days this week, and they're short days.

And finally, as most of you know, we're a bit uncertain what will happen with Rich's job this year. He works for an IT company that has a contract with a large mobile phone/telecomm company. Rich works on the billing application there. The "client" has decided to not use that outsourced application any longer and instead migrate everyone over to their own in-house system.
Which really makes sense. Why run 2 billing applications when you can run one and why pay for outsourcing when you have a team already running it.
So we've known for over a year that Rich's job would be going away eventually. Well it looks like "eventually" is sometime this year.
He's been looking for jobs internally and found a prospect with the same client in the same building doing something he's quite excited about. He's been persuing this opportunity for about 9 months but it looks like things will finally fall into place in February.
He found out yesterday there are some internal politics at play that may have been the reason for the long, drawn out process. But the manager of the group wants Rich and has a good case for him. Hopefully the decision will be made this week or early next week.
Rich is really excited about working with this team, the manager and on the team. He'll be learning something new, and we all know how he loves to learn!
So, please keep us in your thoughts, prayers, whatever... and that this finally comes to a conclusion (one way or the other) this week. It's starting to stress Rich out a bit!

I've been knitting like crazy. Once I finished Rich's sweater I got the bug! I made a pair of "topless" mittens that I love (I'll post a picture soon). And I am working on a baby sweater for a friend who is having a baby soon.
I still have a queue a mile long of things I want to make. The boys still want me to make some hats for them and I really want to make something for me. I can't work on more than one thing at a time -- I'll get confused!

What? The Weekend already?
It's been a weird week. With Josh home sick on Monday, then no school Tuesday... my week's just been thrown off kilter!
On Tuesday night Rich and I stayed up and watched the election results. Of course, we had to. And I've been processing the results. It was a bit surreal. While I did not vote for Obama, watching the crowd react was surreal. And the significance of the occasion was not lost on me. I really felt like I was watching an historical moment.
On one hand, I don't agree with Obama's politics so I was disappointed. But on the other hand, I was proud at what we've accomplished as a nation. The turn out for this election was amazing, that so many of us exercised our right to vote is part of what makes this country great. And the passion in the election too. I don't think I've ever seen an election with so much hype and following!
I did watch McCain's concession speech and I was really moved by it. I thought he did a great job and I thought it really showed what a stand up guy he really is. Made me proud that I'd voted for him.
I had to substitute 3 year olds the next morning so I did not watch Obama's speech. But, I knew I'd be able to find it on the internet -- which I did. I thought he gave a good speech too. Very passionate, which proved he's got a gift for oration.
So, I wish Mr. Obama well in his new job -- after all, he is now my President and I really want him to do a great job. He's got a tough job ahead of him.
Moving on...
Like I said, Tuesday just threw my whole week off. And then the substituting -- which is lots of fun, plus it brings in a bit of extra cash -- also shifted my week. Now it's Friday!
We're getting ready for Sam's birthday next week. So this weekend I'm sure I'll be baking cookies or cup cakes for his class as well as making a birthday cake and putting the final touches on the party. I think Josh has his baseball party/trophy thing this weekend too... but I'm not 100% sure!
Now, I'm just waiting for my new dishwasher to be installed (insert happy dance here) and then off to bring Sam to gymanstics!

What Happened to the Week?
Seriously.
I don't know where the week went.
It's been a weird week. Josh came home from ALP (the gifted program he does) on Wednesday with a bad report. Apparently, he likes to talk. This is not news to me. At school he's always been a good worker and he's been able to control his "talking" so it doesn't get in the way of learning.
It's the second time in 4 weeks he's gotten in trouble for talking and not doing his work. Of course we had to address this before it becomes a problem.
And we wanted to make sure he understood how serious we are about good behavior in school. So we took away all his electronic games -- no computer, no DS, no PS2 and No TV for the rest of the week. And he also has to go to bed lights out at 7:00 every school day.
He was upset at first, but honestly, I don't think it was that bad for him. He and Sam played nicely all the rest of the week. And to be honest, it was nice not having the TV on or the kids fighting over the laptop or PS2.
And I'm pleased to report he's been much better at school. Of course the real test is next Wednesday when he goes back to ALP.
We've been trying to do "Friday Family Fun Nights" now that school is back in session. Josh's baseball practice was canceled earlier this week and rescheduled for last night. Our plan was to go down and watch his practice and maybe go out for ice cream after. But, as luck would have it, problems came up at Rich's work and he had to work. He's still working and probably will until tonight. He may have to work tomorrow too.
Not to ruin our fun though. The boys and I went down to the ball field and watched Josh's practice. It was fun. He's got a cute little team. What they lack in talent, they make up for in enthusiasm.
Today Josh as a ball game and then he's going to a sleep over. So even though Rich has to work, we should be entertained and busy enough.

I'm still here...
I know. I've been gone a bit.
Sorry. I'm still here and still alive. Don't worry.
This week has been crazy. Rich has been working like a mad dawg. He had an install on Wednesday night -- so of course he was up all night -- he got up on Wednesday at 6:00 am and didn't go to bed until Thursday night at 10:00 pm. We're not in college anymore... all nighters are harder on the body when you're 40-something!
And I've had a few other things going on -- mostly trying to keep Sam entertained while Josh is at school. Sam starts school on Wednesday. He will be in 4 days a week for 4 hours. It should be a nice break for me and let me get things done that I need to do!
We've also been having some problems with our laptop. Not major -- but the battery won't hold a charge. We had the same problem last year and Dell replaced it under warranty -- this new battery is 2 months out of warranty and crapped out.
So I've been trying to get a new battery for it. Dell wants $299 for a new battery! Honestly, that's highway robbery! I know this is a common problem too -- just look on line and you can find heaps of other issues with the same battery and same laptop. Even the Dell website has a "user reviews" when you go to order the battery. Not one is favorable. You'd think Dell would get with the program.
And $300 to replace a battery? We just bought the kids a brand new HP laptop for $700 -- and it's comparable to this Dell! Ludicrous.
I tried writing them an email but have been ping-ponged all over the place and given form letters as response.
We did find some cheaper batteries on line with other distributors. We found one with a great warranty for $75 from SimpleMicro.com. Same battery! So we ordered it, and it was DOA. Piece of junk. Of course then you start reading the fine print and you have to pay $20 "restocking fee," plus shipping back, plus they have to "review" it.... Cost us more than $75 to fix it! I did try to contact them, but the email address they give you to contact them doesn't work.
The whole thing has really cheesed me off. I used to work in customer service and it really ticks me off when I see how the industry has gone backwards.
But anyway, we've decided to cut our losses and just use the laptop plugged in. It's not like we need to use it where there is no power.
And then yesterday -- Rich had to work (and he is today too). And Sam was sick. The poor boy does nothing by half measures. He is prone to high temps when he's sick. The lowest I could get his temp was 102.8 -- at it's peak it was 104.8. It really stresses me out when he gets sick.
He was born with just one kidney so we are not supposed to give him Advil or Ibuprofen. And Tylenol is great, but doesn't work quite as well and not as long. Last night I was up every 4 hours to give him more Tylenol -- and freaking out because his temp wouldn't go down. He spent half the night in bed with me. When he woke up this morning (at 7:30 -- totally unheard of) he was covered in sweat. He was soaking wet, my sheets where he was sleeping were soaking wet and because he was next to me, I was soaking wet! The fever broke.
He seems to be on the mend today. Much more himself but still a bit clingy. I'm washing all the sheets in the house.
All day yesterday and all night last night I was just so thankful that this happened this weekend and not next weekend; Rich and I are going on a long awaited vacation for our 10th anniversary. I'm not sure how I would have been able to relax leaving a sick boy behind!
So, hopefully things will calm down a bit this week and get back to normal.

We've also been having some problems with our laptop. Not major -- but the battery won't hold a charge. We had the same problem last year and Dell replaced it under warranty -- this new battery is 2 months out of warranty and crapped out.
So I've been trying to get a new battery for it. Dell wants $299 for a new battery! Honestly, that's highway robbery! I know this is a common problem too -- just look on line and you can find heaps of other issues with the same battery and same laptop. Even the Dell website has a "user reviews" when you go to order the battery. Not one is favorable. You'd think Dell would get with the program.
And $300 to replace a battery? We just bought the kids a brand new HP laptop for $700 -- and it's comparable to this Dell! Ludicrous.
I tried writing them an email but have been ping-ponged all over the place and given form letters as response.
We did find some cheaper batteries on line with other distributors. We found one with a great warranty for $75 from SimpleMicro.com. Same battery! So we ordered it, and it was DOA. Piece of junk. Of course then you start reading the fine print and you have to pay $20 "restocking fee," plus shipping back, plus they have to "review" it.... Cost us more than $75 to fix it! I did try to contact them, but the email address they give you to contact them doesn't work.
The whole thing has really cheesed me off. I used to work in customer service and it really ticks me off when I see how the industry has gone backwards.
But anyway, we've decided to cut our losses and just use the laptop plugged in. It's not like we need to use it where there is no power.
And then yesterday -- Rich had to work (and he is today too). And Sam was sick. The poor boy does nothing by half measures. He is prone to high temps when he's sick. The lowest I could get his temp was 102.8 -- at it's peak it was 104.8. It really stresses me out when he gets sick.
He was born with just one kidney so we are not supposed to give him Advil or Ibuprofen. And Tylenol is great, but doesn't work quite as well and not as long. Last night I was up every 4 hours to give him more Tylenol -- and freaking out because his temp wouldn't go down. He spent half the night in bed with me. When he woke up this morning (at 7:30 -- totally unheard of) he was covered in sweat. He was soaking wet, my sheets where he was sleeping were soaking wet and because he was next to me, I was soaking wet! The fever broke.
He seems to be on the mend today. Much more himself but still a bit clingy. I'm washing all the sheets in the house.
All day yesterday and all night last night I was just so thankful that this happened this weekend and not next weekend; Rich and I are going on a long awaited vacation for our 10th anniversary. I'm not sure how I would have been able to relax leaving a sick boy behind!
So, hopefully things will calm down a bit this week and get back to normal.
