Random Kid Stuff

Last week the boys had VBS so I had my mornings full of a whole lot of nothing! It was wonderful!

This week the kids have been home. And a bit bored! I’ve been trying to get the house cleaned up (little by little). Next week we have Cub Scout Day Camp, then the week after that we go to visit my parents. The house has to be cleaned before we leave, and this week is the best time to do it. Poor kids have had to entertain themselves without making a mess!

Josh has decided he wants some money to buy things I won’t buy for him, so he put up a chore list the other day.

You will notice right under “make bed” is “Be nice 2 bro.”  Which technically, doesn’t qualify as a chore, but apparently Josh thinks of it as one.

It's All in the Marketing?

On Sunday we went to Borders to grab a "treat" at the coffee shop and do some last minute Christmas Shopping. We love going there on cold winter mornings because we can look around, the boys can get excited about what books they want and we can go get a coffee and a treat at the cafe!

As we were getting ready I said to Sam that he had to hurry up because we were going to Borders.

He said, "I don't want to go! You know WHY it's called BORDERS? Because it's BORING!"

Then later on in the car he said, "You know they shouldn't call it Borders because people will think it's boring. They should call it 'FUNNERS' because it's FUN!"

Perhaps we should let Borders customer service know.

The Things They Say

I haven't done any kidisms in a while.

And the boys have not stopped talking (and talking and talking and talking). They do come up with some good ones from time to time. It's hard to catch them all or remember them, so I do like to blog them here, just so I don't forget about them.

Here are some of the "latest" kidisms in our house.

Sam was not eating his lunch. He had 1/2 a tuna sandwich on his plate and it was cut into 2 pieces. He'd only eaten one bite out of each triangle.

Me: Sam, eat your lunch. (I should just record this because I have to say it EVERY meal time... "Eat your breakfast," "Eat your lunch," "Eat your dinner.")

Sam: It's all gone... look, only crust.

Me: No Sam, there's still lots of food there... here, let me help you. (I pick up one sandwich and break it in half so he can eat it easier without, heaven forbid, eating any crust).

Sam -- starts to cry: MOM! Now I have more!!! Don't do that!!!

Me: What?

Sam: Look, (counts his sandwich pieces)... 1, 2, 3! Now I have THREE not TWO!!!!

----------

Josh recently got a Golden Retriever Webkinz and he really loves it. We were at the park one day and a lady, walking a "real live Golden Retriever" stopped and the boys were petting him.

Josh (after telling the lady about his Webkinz) : This is the first Real Live Golden Retriever I've ever seen!

Lady: Really? Are you sure?

Josh: Well, I am seven so I've had a lot of time to forget stuff.

----------

Then this morning....

Sam: Mom, say something funny.

Me: Why?

Sam: Because I want to tell you something from Franklin. Just say something.

Me: Okay. Tomorrow is Halloween.

Sam: You can say that again!

Eavesdropping

Sam and my niece Gabby were thick as thieves last week. They had lots of fun playing (and getting into a bit of trouble) together.

This was a common sight:

And here is a snippet of some of the conversations they had while playing with those Barbies they are holding....

Action....

The players
:

Sam -- age 3.
Gabby -- age 5. Who said to me, "Sam and I are the same size, but I'm bigger."

Setting:

The back seat of the car.

Scene:

The kids are pretend playing with the Barbies. Gabby takes the lead.

+++

Sam: Can you come out and play?

Gabby: No. I can't play today. I have some things to do. I have to go shopping and then go to the mall. Then I have to go to the doctor because I broke my leg. While I'm at the doctor, I think I'll have a baby, so I'll be too busy to play today.

Sam: Okay, maybe tomorrow.

+++

Sam: My mom and my sister died.

Gabby: Oh, well, I'm about to die too.

Sam: Oh no!

Gabby: Surprise! I'm back alive again! We can play!

++++

And the best of all...

Gabby: OOPS! I accidentally ate your sister! Sorry!

Sam: That's okay.

+++

Seriously, I don't know where they come up with this stuff!

edited to add: I'm linking this back to Fussypants's Grateful Thursday's posts. I'm thankful for kids that keep me laughing!

Overheard in the Car Today...

Sam (tired, cranky and whiney): Mommy, I'm thirsty! I want some water!

I hand him a bottle of water.

Sam: No! Not that water, it's all wet!

Even More Conversations with a Three Year old

Scene: In the car.

Sam -- starts to fake cry.

Me: What's up Sam?

Sam: I want some quiet time!

Me: Okay.

Sam: My mouth wants loud time and won't let me have any quiet time!

Me: Well you just tell your mouth it's quiet time and not loud time.

Sam: Mouth, it's quiet time! Mommy! My mouth's not listening!!!!

Now what makes this even funnier, is we had this conversation (or similar) THREE times today!

What a nut!

Can't Blame Him For Trying

We have a rule in our house. Sam is not allowed to have any apple juice until he eats.

So if he wants juice in the morning, he has to eat breakfast. If he wants it in the afternoon, he has to eat lunch. We do this, not to be mean, but without giving TMI, he was having "issues" with his tummy and juice. Short of giving it up completely, this seems to be working.

The following conversations took place this weekend.

Sam: Mom, can I have some juice?

Me: Did you finish your sandwich?

Sam: Yes

Me: No you didn't I still see a couple bites.

Sam -- goes away, comes back: Look Mommy! I'm a Clean Plate Clubber! (shows me his plate) Can I have some juice now?

Me: Sam, where is your sandwich?

Sam: In the garbage.

+++

Next conversation -- took place this morning. Similar situation. He wanted juice, he hadn't finished his breakfast.

Sam: Mommy, can I have some juice please?

Me: No Sam, you have to finish breakfast. I can still see your sandwich (he likes turkey sandwiches for breakfast).

Sam -- gets up, picks up plate and moves it out of my line of sight: There Mommy, now you can't see it anymore. Can I have some juice now?

What is a mom to do?

More Conversations with a Three Year Old

Sunday at the grocery store -- we were getting out of the car and Sam saw a teenage boy with LOTS of black curly hair helping his mom put groceries in the car.

Sam: Who is that Mommy? (pointing to the boy)

Me: I don't know Sam.

Sam: Hey! Maybe he's my Daddy!

Conversations with a Three Year Old

Today's laugh brought to you by Sam.

In the carpool lane at school this morning.

Sam: Mom, can I drive?

Me: No.

Sam: Come on. Just for a little bit? Please?

Me: No, Sam - you're 3! You have to be 16 to drive!

Sam: Awwwe! Mooommm! (pouts and crosses his arms)

Hey, That's Catchy....

When Sam and I are in the car, we usually listen to music.

Lately, we've been listening to one of the local radio stations here. Every once in a while, Sam will hear something and ask questions about it.

The other day, a song by Snow Patrol came on.

Sam asked me, "How do you make snow Mommy?"

I tried to explain how snow is frozen raindrops that come down from the clouds.

"Yes, but how do you MAKE snow?"

I guess science is lost on a three year old.

I did what every Christian mother who doesn't know the answer does, "Well Sam, I don't make snow. God does."

Sam: "Oh! God makes snow! Why didn't you just say so?"

A few days ago we were, again, listening to the radio.

Sam: "Mommy, I can't roll!"

Me: "What?"

Sam, getting upset: "I can't ROLL!"

Me: "You can't roll? What are you talking about?"

Sam: "Like they said on there [the radio]. Look, [demonstrating] I can Rock, but I can't Roll!"

Happy Meal

More conversations with Sam....

Me: Sam, it's time to get into your pajamas....

Sam: No, I want to sleep naked, like Donald.

Me: Naked? Like Donald? Who's Donald?

Sam: Like the toys from McDonald's!

Boy-o-Boyardee!

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights we feed the kids at our "normal" family dinner time of 5:00 and then Rich and I eat later when the kids are in bed.

This works out well for our family. Rich and I eat foods the kids wouldn't normally eat -- spicy foods like Veggie Curry and Fajitas. Plus it's like a "date" only we don't have to leave the house, hire a babysitter, plus, we can BOTH enjoy a glass (or two) of wine and not have to worry about driving home.

On these nights the kids also get a "treat" meal -- something Rich and I don't eat or something special for them. It's always an "easy" meal: chicken nuggets, scrambled eggs, hot dogs, etc...

Well, apparently, I'm falling down as a parent.

Today Josh wanted Spaghetti-O's & Meatballs and Sam wanted Mac & Cheese.

Now bear in mind they ASKED for this meal.

I served it and wouldn't you know I had to FORCE them to eat it!

Josh told me half way through his meal he'd rather have Salmon on Friday nights!
