Spring Break 2011: Soccer!

Today is the last day of Spring Break 2011.

We really didn't to a whole lot, other than going to Fernbank on Thursday.  But we did have a busy Saturday!

Josh got a skateboard for his birthday. He's been practicing and practicing on it and he's getting much better.  One thing he's been itching to do is go to one of our local parks that has a skate ramp. Every time we go it's over crowded with teens so Josh hasn't been able to get on. Plus, it's a bit intimidating with lots of High Schoolers skating on it. It's not that big of a "skate park."  Rich promised Josh he'd take him down early one morning before the teens invaded. So, Saturday morning, off they went.

Not Even Rain Can Stop Soccer!

We've had LOTS of rain. I think it's been raining, and really raining hard, every day since last Monday. I expect to see Arc's any day sailing down the raging river (that used to be a cute creek) in our back garden.

Josh had a Cub Scout nature walk, soccer practice and baseball practice canceled this week. But Saturday we woke up and it was not raining. So we had our second week of the boys sporting events.

First up, soccer! When we got there, it was not raining and the boys looked ready to go! Since Josh missed last week this was his first game in 2 years!

My soccer dudes!

I know this is a cheesy picture but it was the best I could get - they were itching to go play!

Warming up with Daddy

Shortly after Josh's game started the rain began to fall - lightly.

Josh playing soccer

Josh did really well. He hasn't played in two years but he has a great eye. He was playing offense and he stayed down field, tried to get into position for his team mates to pass and even got a few good passes in. And one really good shot on goal. While he didn't score this week, his team won 4-0 for the second week in a row. Next week we play the best team in the league so we'll see how well they do then!

Josh playing soccer

After Josh's game it was time for Sam to play and the heaven's opened up!

It's wet MOM!

All the kids (and coaches) had fun in the pouring rain playing soccer!

Josh playing in the rain

I didn't keep score on Sam's team, but I think it may have ended in a tie. Sam had some really good chances as well. He's working on getting in there and not being so polite about keeping and taking the ball! And I'm happy to say he's not used his hands once! Although he did complain to me once, "That kid keeps pushing me!" I told him it was soccer and to push back. Oh the conflicting messages we send!

rainy soccer playing

In the end, all the boys were soaked to the bone! I was under an umbrella and still managed to get soaking wet!

Rainy soccer

The afternoon's baseball game was rained out. And today it looks like soccer practice will be rained out as well.

Here's hoping we get some dry weather this week!

Hello Out There? Is anyone still reading????

I can't believe it's been 2 months since I last updated!

We're no longer on vacation in Michigan with my parents... we've been home for quite a while!

Things around here have been so busy! Here's a quick update/recap of our life the last two months...

We got home from my parent's house and Josh decided to re-learn to ride his bike. He used to be able to ride it, but then he fell and lost his nerve so he had to re-learn this summer. Well, it didn't take him long and now I can barely get him off it!

Sam got a new bike too and loves to ride his. When they come home from school all they want to do is ride their bikes!

We started school here early August. Josh LOVES his 3rd grade teacher - and so do I! She's wonderful and just what Josh needs!

I went back to work two mornings a week at Sam's preschool as the teaching assistant in a 2 year old class. I really love it! It's so nice to have something to do! And the money is all going toward the kid's activities!

Both Josh and Sam are playing soccer this year. Josh is also playing baseball AND he's joined the Cub Scouts AND he's doing a project for the school Science Fair! We are going to be one busy family!

Today was the first day of sports - and Josh was sick! So we missed his games, but Sam had fun at his!

He's a "White Bear!"

Here he is scoring a goal on Daddy (the assistant coach) during practice.

Sam and Daddy, just before the game started!

The last thing I wanted to post pictures of is a project Josh did for ALP. He had to turn a clothes pin into a "Flying Animal." He decided to make a pheasant because when we were in Michigan, we went out with Grampa and watched Annie (Grampa's dog) point pheasants and show off what she'd learned at "Doggy Boot Camp" getting ready for hunting season. After, we got some of the feathers off the dead birds.

Here's Josh's pheasant --

Then he made an "Above and Beyond" project by making a diorama of the pheasant's habitat.

The whole project:

And Sam wanted to make something too so he made a Race Track! This ended up being his class project we didn't know he'd need! The next day he came home with a homework assignment called, "It looks like a box, but really it's a....."

That's a bit of what's been going on with us -- in a nutshell. I promise to make more time to post pictures and updates. We're busy, but having lots of fun! I just need to start getting into the swing of things again!

Cheering for the Team

We had another fun, yet busy weekend.

I'm beginning to think, as the kid get older, weekends will get more and more hectic!

A couple Friday's ago, Sam started gymnastics at our local parks and rec. Let me tell you -- he LOVES it! And talks about going back all week. The only disappointing thing is it's only 1/2 hour -- the kids could go 45 minutes to an hour and still be okay.

One of the girls from his class is in their with him, as are several other friends we know from around the neighborhood. He's not the only boy either, which is good for him.

Sam at Gymnastics

But he loves it so I think we may continue with this for as long as we can. I'm not sure how long he'll be able to continue it, but gymnastics was not on "the list" of restricted activities from his nephrologist. So we'll see.

Josh's baseball season is coming to an end. Next week is his last game! He's done so well this year. Last weekend the coach on the opposing team called him out as a "big hitter!" He was so excited. We've been going to the playground in the evenings after dinner. He and Rich play catch to practice Josh's catching and throwing. It's just amazing what a difference a year makes!

Sunday was the important Liverpool v. Chelsea match up. The boys were all excited... both teams were undefeated and Chelsea hadn't lost at home in over 4 years... And they hadn't lost in the league since last December. But, records are made to be broken so we were all excited and gearing up for the match!

Getting Ready for the Game

Josh's Liverpool shirt has "16 Pennant" on the back but he wanted "9 Torres." Sam had no number so we made signs and pinned them on their backs.

Getting Ready for the Game

We invited Josh's baseball coach over to watch too. He is from Ireland and a Liverpool supporter as well. He's got 4 boys (triplets in 1st grade and another Sam's age) and all but one are Liverpool supporters... the other is a Chelsea fan. It was lots of fun for all the boys. I think Rich really loved watching and talking football with someone. And another Liverpool fan as well just made it all the more fun.

Josh and Sam had a great time playing with the kids too. They're all so cute. I tried to get a picture of them all but the camera was acting up.

Anyway, the result of the game....

Liverpool scored in the first 10 minutes (ish) of the game and set the speed. They had several good chances to add to the score but never managed another goal. Thankfully, Chelsea didn't capitalize on any chances either so the final score...

Liverpool 1-Chelsea 0 final score

And we are top of the table and all happy in the house...

go Liverpool!

Can't Get it Out of My Head!

It's no secret that Rich is a HUGE Liverpool FC supporter (that's an English Soccer team for those of you that don't follow football).

When we lived in England we only had one TV so I used to be forced to watch the games with him every time they were on. We also had a small flat/house so there wasn't any room to escape.

Anyway, I grew to really enjoy it as well. But since we moved over here and we have an INSANE number of TV's and a finished basement, Rich generally watches the games down there in relative peace and quiet.

This weekend, however, we decided the boys needed to be emerged in their history... We forced them to watch Liverpool v. Everton on TV. A local derby with a fierce rivalry. Everton's football grounds, Goodison Park, is just a stones throw (quite literally) from Liverpool's Anfield Stadium -- so as you can imagine, it was quite a big game.

So, what do you do when you want to get your kids interested in a football game they have no interest in watching?

You teach them football songs. Yes, my kids learned, and watched (thanks to YouTube) some Liverpool football songs... their favorite (and you can see why when you press play) was this one:

And since Sam quite likes "The Ants Go Marching One by One" even he got into the song! All weekend the video played over and over, the boys sung it, the boys hummed it... Josh even made up new words at one point for when HE plays #9 for Liverpool!

And now, the song is forever stuck in my head. So I'm sharing it with you...

And yes, Fernando Torres did get the ball and score again and again and again (but for some reason the thrid was disallowed)... The result was a good one... Liverpool 2 - Everton 0.

Oh Happy Day, oh happy day!

Well, today has been interesting at the very least.

Last week I went to have my oil changed and tires rotated at Jiffy Lube. Ever since, my car has been making funny noises when I braked. So today, after I dropped Sam off at school I checked my tires to make sure there was no flat -- that's just what it sounded like -- and lo and behold, one of the bolts/lug nuts was missing from my driver's side front tire! Needless to say, before getting on the highway, I stopped at Jiffy Lube so they could "fix it!" Hahahahahaha! When I told them what happened, the guys at Jiffy Lube said (and I quote), "Oh Shit!"

They were very nice and sent me to have the car fixed at their expense to another service station. Apparently, they had overtightened the lug nuts when they rotated the tire. Everyone at both Jiffy Lube and America's Service Station were very nice and helpful!

So disaster averted!

But, we are celebrating at our house for more than one reason.

First, Liverpool FC have made it to the Champions' League final by beating Chelsea in Penalties. The final to be held on May 23rd against either Milan or Manchester United.

Go Red Men!!!!

But, depending on who you talk to, the bigger news is WE HAVE A LOST TOOTH!!!!!

After a very, very long time, Josh's tooth finally fell out! We even had a trip to the dentist yesterday where she told Josh to wiggle his teeth as much as possible!

And Mission Accomplished!!!

We expect more teeth out in the next few weeks!

The Tooth Fairy is on Alert!

The White Knights -- Game 1

Josh's first soccer game was on Saturday. We had a great time!

He's in the "Under 8" division and our team is The White Knights.

The games in this division are played 6 on 6 -- with 1 goalie and 5 other players. There is more of a focus on playing "properly" in this division -- a bit less of a free for all than in the "Under 6" and "Under 5" divisions! Everyone still gets to play and they rotate through the different positions.

Josh was lucky because he got to play Offense, Defense and Goalie this time. Although next time, he may not get a turn in the goal.

Josh and his best friend Sean.

Warming up.

Being the Goalie.

I have a whole series of Josh "Playing" in the goal. He told me goalie was only fun when there was something to do. And Defense was really boring! I think that's mostly because when Josh was playing defense, his team was up scoring goals!

Josh made 2 really good saves as goalie, and did not let any in. This is just after he saved the 2nd one!

Playing Offense.

"I wanna play too!"

It was very hard to keep Sam off the pitch! He wanted to play football with the big kids too!

Josh and Sean (and Marco in the background) taking a rest and having a snack.

I did not "keep score" of the game so I don't know who won. But I think it may have been Josh's team. They were really all over the pitch and had some great plays. One of Josh's friends that was on the other team said it was a 5-5 draw, but I don't think the other team scored 5 goals!

So, my prerogative as mom is to say Josh's team won!

On Sunday, Josh declaired it was "Mommy and Joshie Day." And he wanted to Go Golfing!

We had a great time and decided next time we should make it Family Day and have Daddy and Sam come too!

And we got ice cream afterwards!
