Well, There's an Hour I Will Never Get Back!

.... but I'm not entirely sure I want it back!

I went to the grocery store with both the boys this morning -- Rich is STILL working.

We got to the grocery store and made it about 1/4 through when I realized I left my purse at home.

So we had to go back home and get it. This time it was "less" embarrassing -- last time I forgot it, I was already through the check out! Yes, the people at my local Publix know me! At any rate they do now! LOL!

And we get back to the grocery store... I forgot what it's like shopping with two of them.

"Mommy, can we have candy?"

No, sweetie, we have lots at home already.

"PUHLEEEESSSEEEE!!!"

Josh, we have lots of Halloween candy still.

(said while pouting and stamping feet): "But we don't have THAT kind!"

Suddenly, an idea hits. Okay Josh, we can get 4 pieces of THAT candy but you have to throw away ALL your Halloween Candy!

No deal.

Anyway, things continued along this line for the entire NINETY MINUTES (we had to have an emergency potty stop) I was at the grocery store! By myself or with just Sam, 45 minutes TOPS door-to-door.

  1. Wow! A 90 minute trip to the grocery store?! LMAO! Towards the end, did you have to go around again and get new cartons of milk and frozen/refrigerated stuff because they'd been standing at room temperature for so long and were melted? hehe. Good call on the candy request. I know I would not have handled that half as logically (I would've been more like "I said no! Now shut it!").

  2. I know, believe me! It takes me two hours to grocery shop if I have to take all three kids. And I end up with boxes of Little Debbies, Cocoa Puffs, and Toaster Strudel!

  4. For me it depends on what store I go to. Walmart takes 90 minutes if I bring the kids or not. Or it could take even longer if my husband isn't there and I can enjoy myself.

I don't know what it is, but the kids don't affect my time any more. I remember when I had all little kids, it was a trial, but by the time I had 5 kids I made a rule, if nobody tells me what great kids I have, then you are all in trouble! Now, I could do this because when you go to the store with 5 kids under the age of 7, people watch you. They know you are going to destroy the store and cause a ruckous. So they compliment you when your kids are awesome! (if they were great and noone says anything, I didn't punish them, btw)
I also made a rule that if they ASKED for something then they got NOTHING. They had to be good the whole store trip, and then I would get them something if they were good, but not every time, but probably 2 out of 3 trips. Enough for them to want to be good, but often without so that they knew they weren't entitled to it.
And stick to your guns! If they are NOT good, or ask even once, do not cave in. They are allowed to say "That looks good, I bet I'd like that." But not ask for it. (that was my husband's training!)

  6. Oh My Goodness!! At least you hadn't gone to check-out yet!
One time when my husband did the grocery shopping (I was at work) he got all the way through the check-out and had a brain melt-down trying to remember his ATM/Pin number. He called me to see if I knew it - Um, no, I have a hard enough time remembering my own. Needless to say - I now know his number too!

My kids are 10 and 12 and will still do the same thing in the grocery store - they can always find something they want. :)

  7. OMG- I know the feeling. I once made it through the check out, reached into my purse, and realized that I'd left my jeanie card in my other pants pocket. I was so embarrassed. It must happen a lot more than you think though because they acted like it was no big deal. They even put my cold items in the bagged ice refrigerator while I was out.
